It helped that we both have family members who cruise. One factor for us was Jess being introverted, as this impacted many areas our decision making. Other factors included, but not limited to, we are middle aged (aka not just looking to get drunk and/or party), we don’t smoke, and we generally don’t gamble. We are lucky to have good jobs (and job security) that we are willing and able to pay for quality – but not too much on our first cruise.

Jess did a lot of researching – including many a YouTube rabbit hole – into many cruise lines and cruising in general. A new factor emerged regarding brand loyalty and perks that come with loyalty. Being thorough, Jess priced out equivalent cruises and packages/costs (drink, internet, etc.) and found that Disney front loads the costs but is roughly (~10% more expensive) than other lines of similar quality. Considering those lines have gambling and Disney does not, as well as being a family centered in theory there are less alcohol sales, it is Disney most likely evening out the revenue, again by front loading the costs.

In the end, the fact there were no casinos, adult only areas – and areas/activities to occupy kids, an easy way to control costs, it is easy and fast to go up the loyalty ladder with pretty clear perks, and of course the quality it was a no brainer to go with Disney.

Our second cruise was a family cruise, which included significant others of our (adult) niece and nephew. Our niece’s boyfriend had cruised a lot across multiple lines and corroborated Jess’s research regarding Disney being a bit better quality all around and way cleaner. There is a lot more story to that cruise, that I’ll post and link to later.

Will we only ever cruise Disney? Probably not. Even with their connections to other lines with Adventures by Disney and their expanding fleet, they still don’t cruise everywhere we want to go. Right now cruising is more about relaxing and exploring the ships rather than the ports of call.

It took Daniel a few years before convincing Jess to consider going on a cruise.
